How to reset your robot vacuum

Roombas are some of the most popular robovacs. They’ve been around for a while and were among the first robotic vacuums introduced. iRobot is losing its market dominance to Chinese brands that manufacture robots that vacuum, mop, and clean themselves with almost no human intervention.

If you’re tempted by one of these and want to get rid of your Roomba, reset it before selling it or giving it to someone. You can also reset it to fix issues, even if you don’t intend to sell it. Performing a factory reset on your Roomba is easy and only takes a few minutes. Here’s how it’s done.

How to factory reset your Roomba using the app

The easiest way to reset your robot is through the iRobot Home app, provided it’s paired with your robot vacuum. The process is straightforward and only takes a couple of seconds. Before trying it, make sure your phone and Roomba are on the same Wi-Fi network and have enough battery life.

Resetting your Roomba removes the pairing between your vacuum and account. It also removes your maps and personal data from iRobot’s servers.

  1. Open the iRobot Home app on your smartphone.
  2. Select your robot and tap the cogwheel icon or tap Product Settings.
  3. Tap About.
  4. Tap Remove device from account.
  5. Confirm the process by tapping Factory Reset Roomba.
  6. If you see an option that reads Save maps during factory reset, deactivate it if you’re getting rid of your robot or want it to remap your house. Otherwise, make sure it’s activated to keep your maps and restore them on your newly reset robot.

How to reset your Roomba without using the app

If you want to reset your Roomba and don’t want to use the app, reset it using the physical buttons on the robot. The steps differ depending on your robot’s model, so follow the process for the correct model.

  1. Make sure your Roomba robot vacuum is on.
  2. Remove the dust bin.
  3. Press and hold the Clean button for 10 seconds.
  4. Your Roomba plays a tone.
  5. Press the Clean button again to confirm the reset process.

Combo models

To reset a combo model, you’ll press a dedicated button.

  1. Make sure your Roomba robot vacuum is on.
  2. Open the lid.
  3. Press and hold the Reset button for ten seconds (to the left of the on/off switch).

Don’t forget maintenance and care

If you performed a factory reset to solve a problem, starting from scratch is a good way to troubleshoot issues. However, some problems are due to worn parts, so inspect your robot to spot them. Finding replacement parts and accessories for Roomba vacuums is easy, as they’re popular online.

Whether you’re selling your robot or resetting it to solve issues, it’s important to remember the importance of cleaning your robot. This ensures no debris blocks physical parts. It also helps with cleaning efficiency.
