The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is official, and Google’s already showing it off

We joke that OEMs leak their own products to drum up interest, but Google isn’t even trying to hide it anymore. We already knew about a Pixel 9 event scheduled for August 13, and we’ve long expected to see a sequel to the Pixel Fold around that time. We also heard rumblings that Google would shake up the naming scheme for its foldable line this year, and Google just went ahead and confirmed all of that with a new teaser video.

Google’s next foldable is officially part of the Pixel 9 family

After showing off the Pixel 9 Pro earlier today, Google posted the teaser on YouTube, Threads, and other social sites, and the biggest change you’ll notice right away is the name. Evidently, Google felt it was holding its foldable at a disadvantage by releasing it a few months earlier than the rest of the line, resulting in a one-generation gap between the Pixel Fold’s Tensor G2 processor and the Pixel 8’s Tensor G3. This would also explain the company moving its main hardware event forward from its usual time in October to the August 13 launch.

Compared to the first-gen Pixel Fold, you’ll notice right away that the hinge has been redesigned, featuring a more traditional folding mechanism. This was likely done to shrink the top and bottom bezels — most reviewers’ chief complaint about the Pixel Fold — and the results are promising, if the quick glimpse we see of the inner screen at the 22-second mark is any indication. The bezels shown in this teaser are slim and symmetrical, but we don’t get to see the bottom one. Still, previous leaks, including live photos from a government certification site, indicate the bezels will be slim all around.

A second teaser on the Google Store reveals a tiny bit more

Separately, Google published a landing page on the Google Store site with the tagline “Get ready for a whole new era of phones.” Not much else is revealed here, beyond a 10 a.m. PT start time for the August 13 event, but Google did upload a pair of high-res renders that you can check out below.

Aside from showing off the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, the video lets us know that AI — specifically, Gemini — will predictably serve as the main marketing ploy for Google’s Pixel 9 lineup. The video doesn’t show off any new AI functionality in particular, but we expect Google to have at least a handful of Pixel 9-exclusive features up its sleeve. There’s not much left for the imagination, but we’ll know more on August 13.
